Why is my Beard Thin?

Why is my beard thin?

Many people who start growing a beard ask themselves at some point – why is my beard thin? A combination of various things can make your beard thin, but testosterone levels and genetics play the primary role. Let’s see all the possible reasons for that issue and ways to deal with a thin beard.

Why is my Facial Hair Thin?

The following reasons have a direct effect on whether your beard will be thick or thin:

  • Testosterone levels – These can have a huge effect on both the hair on your head and the hair on your face. If your beard is frail, it means that your hair follicles are small and don’t receive enough nutrients and proper blood flow.

If you have high testosterone levels, chances are high that your follicles will grow and mature, leading to thicker facial hair. In the same way, lower testosterone levels will lead to a thinner and frail beard.
  • Genetics – If many of your male ancestors had a thin beard, chances are that you will also have a thin beard. However, if you are not satisfied with your facial hair after a few months of growing it, make sure to pay a visit to a good barber.
  • Nutrition – Proper nutrition will not only affect the thickness of your beard but will also make it grow quicker and healthier. You should consider a diet with enough lean protein, iron, whole grains, foods high in zinc, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables.

Note that vitamins such as B, A, C, and D also affect the growth and thickness of your beard. If you cannot get all the necessary nutrients through diet, you should consider taking a supplement or multivitamin.

Why is my Beard Thicker on One Side?

The uneven growth of a beard usually happens when the overall hair of the person is thinner. If your beard is thicker on one side, it may be due to the abovementioned reasons. On top of that, the issue might be due to some of the following reasons:

  • Blood supply – If the blood vessels on one side of the face are more developed, it will result in more blood delivered to hair follicles on that side. More blood results in more nutrients and oxygen, which results in faster growth and a thicker beard.
  • Sleeping – Many people tend to sleep on the same side every night, which can affect the beard in two ways. First, when you sleep on a certain side, the hair on that side of the face gets rubbed against the pillow. It can cause damage to the hair and result in an imbalance between the left and the right side of the face.

Besides, if you constantly sleep on one side, it can result in a compression of blood vessels. Over time, it will reduce blood flow to hair follicles, which results in less oxygen and nutrition the hair needs for proper growth.
  • Sunlight – A certain study by Collegium Antropologium has shown that too much exposure to the sun is the most common cause of structural damage to hair growth. Prolonged exposure damages the outer cover of the hair, known as the cuticle.
  • Skin conditions – The hair on the head is different than the hair on the face, which means that it can face different problems. Known as xerosis, dry skin is one of the problems which might affect your facial hair.

It can cause the skin to grow scales, which has a big impact on hair growth. Psoriasis and eczema can also cause dry skin.

How to Fix a Thin Beard?

You’ve probably asked yourself numerous times – why is my beard thin? However, you don’t need to worry. There are a few ways that can help you get a thicker beard.

Use Beard Fillers

You can easily add some volume to a thin beard using a beard filler. There are different types of beard fillers, all of which work well on different lengths of beards. These types include:

  • Beard pencils – These are usually used in combination with beard pens. Beard pencils look like casual pens; you can use them to paint directly on the skin and fill empty areas. That way, your beard will look much thicker.
  • Beard pens – Beard pens are ideal for beards of short-medium length. They are used to add a temporary wax color to your existing hair.
  • Beard texturizing powder – This powder is a synthetic keratin that adds some mass and volume to your existing facial hair. It is an ideal choice for a beard of medium-long size.

Stick to a Shorter Beard

I know this is boring advice, but sometimes, sticking to a shorter beard is a better choice if you can’t have a thicker beard. If your beard is thin and patchy, and you would like to grow it long, it might look awkward and with almost no volume.

Use Peppermint and Castor Oils with Beard Oil

If you want to make your beard thicker, two oils can significantly help you: peppermint and castor oil. Peppermint oil increases follicles’ diameter by improving blood circulation, leading to thicker hair.

On the other hand, castor oil is naturally very thick, increasing the weight and volume of your facial hair. It also contains various acids that improve hair growth.

Combining these two oils with your standard beard oil gives you an amazing formula for a thicker beard. Find a 1 oz bottle and fill half of the bottle with beard oil and the other half with castor oil. Then, add 20 drops of peppermint oil, and that’s it!

Use a Beard Roller – a Derma Roller

A derma roller is a tool often used for beard thickening. It’s a handle with a roll that has many tiny micro-needles. Rolling it on your skin will create micro-tears that the skin will try to repair. While repairing the tears, the skin will shuttle blood that is filled with various essential nutrients.

The derma roller was initially used on the scalp, but it has become popular among beard growers. If your facial hair is very light and thin, you should increase its volume by using needles of size between 0.5 and 0.7 mm a couple of times per week.
